I think Moreinu haRav Schach zt"l was against this. Why do we need to light menoras in the public square ? We are in golus and we better not forget that. America is also golus. Even the 6th Lubavitcher Rebbe said 'America iz nit anderesh'.
Why give them publicity here, they don't follow the derech of our gedoilim.
Its not publicity.
It's just publicly making them a big joke.
Chanukah isn't about big menoyras and putting tefilin on shvartzes!
