What happened to the 10 lost tribes?

Could it be that there are lost Jews all over the world waiting to find their way home? Perhaps there are Gentiles living today that are curious to know what their roots may have been? Is there a danger that gentiles who believe they stem from the lost tribes may try to use this as replacement theology? ...Or, is it a good thing to bring others closer to G-d and the Jewish People today?
