What was Shelly thinking?

Now we know why he rarely shmoozes with the media.

NYPOST:

National law-enforcement organizations yesterday ripped state Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver for saying he doesn't go to police funerals, calling his comments a slap in the face to professional cops everywhere.
"Even after what he said, if Mr. Silver ever called for some kind of help, police officers would come to his home to help him. That's the difference between a police officer and an idiot like Mr. Silver," said Bill Johnson, executive director of the National Association for Police Organizations.
"For a public official to make such a statement, its not only an insult to law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line, but its also an abrogation of his duty," said Rich Roberts of the International Union of Police Associations.
Spokesmen for several police advocacy organizations wondered why Silver is still in politics after comments he made earlier this week during the emotional Brooklyn funeral for hero police officer Dillon Stewart. He told The Post: "I don't go to cops' funerals." ...

Silver is Orthodox.
Where are most funerals held?
Any doubts as to why he doesn't go?

A legislative leader is different than an executive branch leader. Such a leader is not a Mayor, Governor, or President, who have command of such forces. It is more common for a commander to attend a funeral of a member of the force he commands. However, the truth is that even a Mayor (or Gov. or Pres.) is not obligated to attend every such event.

Interesting question-could an Ortho person be a politicain of the type where attendance at funerals is mandated?
